scraps"

- pressing tips when working with diagonal seam lines
- how to square up a block
- tips for quilting a string pieced quilt
SUPPLY LIST
All fabrics are 100% cotton, prewashed
Yardages & supplies for the Wall size quilt are bold face in parenthesis (example). Yardages for lap quilt are
in plain type. (example)
- Fabric for background/star point: 1 3/4 yards (3/4 yard) Choose a neutral color such as a
beige/cream print or white-on-white. This should be a good quality fabric with sufficient body. That means no flimsy
(see-thru) muslin. This fabric is your foundation as well as your background. Non-directional prints work best. The
background needs to be unassuming so that it appears to recede.

Examples of background fabrics
- FABRIC FOR STRIPS: At least 8 - 10 fat quarters** of your favorite colors (for the Wall quilt at least 8
fat quarters, 10 is better for variety). Or buy a variety of quarter yard cuts. You can also use some fabrics from
your stash, scrap pieces and/or leftover strips. Total yardage for the lap-size quilt should equal about 1 1/2 to 2
yards
(1 1/2 yards total for the Wall quilt). This will all be clearer after Lesson One.
Almost any color or print will work, just avoid fabrics with a lot of white or color similar to your background.
If you look at my class sample, you'll get an idea of what to use -- for the wall quilt I chose to use only reds,
greens, and blues. In the lower right hand corner, you can see a lap-size that I did in all browns. You may want
yours in pastels, bright primary colors or even Christmas colors.
- FABRIC FOR INSIDE BORDERS: 1 1/2 yards (1 yard)
- FABRIC FOR OUTER BORDERS: 1 1/2 yards (1 yard)
- FABRIC FOR BACKING: 1 3/4 yard of 60" or 90" wide backing fabric. You can also piece 44/45" fabric to equal 56" x
68" (1 yard)
- FABRIC FOR BINDING: 1 yard (3/4 yard)
**A fat quarter is a piece of fabric measuring approximately 18" x 22". Basically it is 1/2 yard cut in
half. Many quilters collect them in great quantity (ask me how I know).
