I haven't received a Quilt U newsletter in several months. What is happening?
ISPs like Hotmail and MSN are aggressively moving email from 'unknown senders' into your junk mail folder.
Unless you wrote to us in the past, all mail from Quilt U is considered unknown.
To keep this from happening, we recommend the following:
1. Login to your Hotmail or MSN account
2. Click on “Options”
3. Click on "More Options"
4. Under “Junk E-Mail”, click on “Safe and blocked senders”
5. Click "Safe senders"
6. Add “QuiltUniversity.com” (without the quotes) to your safe list
How do I get back to the Quilt U home page from my class?
You can return to the home page from any page on our site by clicking on the Quilt University logo at the top of
the page.
The email which contained my password says lessons open at 9 am on Saturday, but I can access them on Friday night.
Is something wrong with my computer?
No. We want to make our classes available to everyone on Saturday morning. However, not all students
live in the United States. To overcome the time zone dilemma, we actually open all lessons on Friday night so
our European students, for example, don't have to wait until Saturday afternoon.
Why do you limit class enrollment?
We want everyone to have a good time at Quilt U. Despite our upgraded Discussion Forum software, it is
apparent from your feedback that there is a point at which too many simultaneous conversations becomes difficult to
follow.
Therefore, we will monitor class enrollments and, if necessary, close registration early to prevent forums and
galleries from becoming too crowded. Enrollment caps will vary, based on the amount of participation different
subjects generate. If we have to close registration early, we will try to schedule an overflow session as soon
as possible.
If it is important that you get into the current session of a class, we encourage you not to wait until the last
minute to register.
It would be nice if I could spell check my forum posts. Typos are embarrassing. Can you help?
When we were looking for ways to add a spell checker to our Discussion Forums, we came across a terrific Internet
Explorer add-on called ieSpell. It installs a button on your IE tool bar so you can check spelling not only on
Quilt U forums, but on any form you fill out at any website. It's free for personal use only. Download
it at http://www.iespell.com
In the Discussion Forum, I no longer see the note about how many new messages there are and the 'New' flags are
missing.
Are you using the same computer and browser? The time of your last visit is stored by your browser in a
cookie on your hard drive. If you change computers or use a different browser, your new browser creates a new
cookie, as if it were your first visit.
Cookies, by themselves, are not a bad thing. They are a way of identifying who you are and what pages you
have visited. Third-party cookies (called adware) on the other hand are installed by advertising agencies to
track what banner ads you have seen and whether you clicked on one. There are several free programs available
that remove adware.
If you feel you need to periodically delete ALL of your cookies, you should wait until your class is over.
Otherwise you will wind up deleting your Quilt U cookies as well.
What is the best way to save the contents of my class Discussion Forum?
The simplest way is to open a document in your word processing program when class begins. Each time you
visit your class, have the document open on your task bar. When you find a message you want to keep, cut and
paste it into your document. If you start the message with a key phrase, such as Color Placement, you can have
your program alphabetize all the messages by topic when class ends.
I use version 6 of Acrobat Reader to print my patterns. Are there any any special instructions I need to know
about?
Make sure the Page Scaling setting is set to 'None'. If the pattern is slightly larger than your printable
surface, Reader will try to compensate by changing the setting to 'Shrink large pages'. You need to change it
back to 'None' to get a pattern that is not distorted. (None is the default.)
What is that RSS button at the bottom of the Registration page?
It indicates that we provide an RSS feed to students who use special news-display programs, frequently called
news readers. They can be stand-alone programs or plug-ins for your browser or email client.
Our feed consists of two things: 1) a weekly announcement when new classes have been added to the Calendar; 2)
occasional bulletins that a particular class is reaching its enrollment cap is about to close.
A news reader is software that periodically, usually hourly, reads a set of news sources, finds any new items and
displays the title in reverse-chronological order on a single page. The user can then choose to click on any
of the headlines in order to learn more details. Users can choose as many RSS feeds as they want.
This service is provided to students who are already familiar with the technology. Because there are so
many products on the market, we are unable to provide assistance setting up and using a news reader.
Do I need a computer graphics program to take your classes?
No. Some of the teachers at Quilt University will offer exercises which can be performed with a graphics
program. There will always be non-computer ways to achieve the same results - by using fabric swatches or
paper and pencil. The exception would be classes specifically geared to software, such as EQ.
I live in Europe where we have the metric system. How can I use all these classes with inches?
We have provided a simple metric conversion table in the Library along with some links to sites where specific
size conversion will be made automatically. We hope this helps. It is also possible to buy rulers with
inch measurements which might be less annoying in the long run.
How many times can I use my password to get into the classroom?
As often as you like, until the classroom closes. We want you to feel comfortable in class. There is no
rush. Take your time, study the examples in the Gallery and ask questions in the Discussion Forum.
Remember, there are NO dumb questions, except the ones you don't ask.
I always worry when I give personal information to an online business. There is already enough junk in my email.
Do you sell my email address?
We do not share your information with anyone. For more specifics, please refer to our
Privacy Statement.
Can I use a credit card to pay for my class?
Yes. We accept Visa and Mastercard from anywhere in the world. We also accept checks or money orders
in US funds from US and Canadian banks. Please do not send cash in the mail.
How can I put my quilts in the gallery? How do I send photos.
If you have a digital camera or scanner, there are directions in
How to Scan, Size and Send Graphics. You can also mail a photo to us at:
Quilt University
7613 Winkler Road
Richmond, VA 23294
If you include an SASE, we will return it to you after we scan it.
What happens if I don't pick up my lesson right away?
That's the beauty of asynchronous learning - you and the teacher don't have to be there at the same time!
New lessons will be posted on Saturday morning of each class week. All of the lessons will remain in available
for three full weeks after the last lesson opens.
I missed Lesson One while on vacation. I now have it but the discussion is already on Lesson Two. Suppose
I have a question about Lesson One?
By all means, ask any question at any time. This is not like a physical classroom where you might distract
the class or cause the teacher to get off the subject. Check previous messages to see if there is an existing
thread related to your question. If so, add your question to that thread by using the reply function.
This helps keep all same-subject materials together.
Can I sign up for two
classes that run simultaneously?
As long as you feel you can do the assignments in both classes, there is no reason not to. After all, you
don't have to be in two places at once.
In shops, they often have a minimum number of students before a class is held. Sometimes I've bought all my
fabric and then the class is cancelled. Will that happen here?
There is no minimum enrollment in Quilt U classes. We will only cancel if the teacher is unavailable due to
illness or other act of God.
Must I access my class from the computer I used to sign up?
Your password is the key to entering any classroom. You may use it from any computer.
My password doesn't work. What's wrong?
Are you sure that you have typed the password correctly? Are you sure that you are online? Is the
class still in session? As soon as class begins, please check the Welcome page for the closing
date. Please make a point to print all the lessons before the classroom closes.
I can get into the class
but the Lesson button does not work. Help!
Sometimes your computer can go offline without your knowledge. You are then looking at a cached version of
the class and can only access an obsolete copy of the page you visited previously. Make sure you are connected
to the internet, then force your browser to retrieve a fresh copy of the page from the server. For IE, press
CTRL + F5.
