Quilting and Surface Embellishment

Machine Quilting can be a quick way to finish a project or just as elaborate and detailed as hand quilting.  Carol Miller will take you  through the basic machine quilting techniques, including both free motion and straight line designs.  You will learn when to use the even feed foot and how different types of batting affect the way your quilting will look.  We will discuss basting for machine quilting, marking the design and deciding which designs are appropriate where.  Your homework will be a practice piece which you can turn into a table runner if you like or just keep as a handy reference.  Four Lessons.  All skill levels as long as you are comfortable with your sewing machine.  See Supply List.
$36         Class starts June 7.

Lesson One opens on June 7; Lesson Two, June 14; Lesson Three, June 21; and Lesson Four on June 28. Once a lesson opens, it remains available until your classroom closes on July 19.

Quilting Designs   Your top is finished and now you must decide how to quilt it.  The designs you create for your quilting can add immeasurably to the impact of your quilt.  In this class you will learn how  to maximize the use of stencils, how to mark accurately for the design to fit your quilt and how to create unique and personal designs for your projects.  Through a variety of exercises, Susan Purney-Mark will take you through the decision making process, teach you how to make a design folder, show you where to find inspiration for your designs and tell you the best marking methods.  This workshop will give you lots of ideas for your next masterpiece and help you stretch your potential.  All levels.  Three Lessons. Dyeing and Painting

Tea Stain Dyeing   For centuries people have been using tea stain dyeing to color textiles or give fabrics an aged or antiqued look.  Fabric designer and textile artist Marjie McWilliams will take you through the simple step-by-step method of making your own test samples and staining your own projects.  Great "Spin Off" ideas will be included so you can do as little or as much staining as you please!  This technique can add Victorian Elegance to quilts, clothing or accessories.  Two Lessons.  All levels.  See Supply List.
$18      [credit card only]   Class starts May 17.

Lesson One opens on May 17; and Lesson Two, May 24.  Once a lesson opens, it remains available until this classroom closes on June 14.

Three Unconventional Ways to Dye   Here is your chance to try three fun and unusual ways to apply Procion MX powdered dyes to cotton muslin.  In the first technique, textile designer and artist Marjie McWilliams uses spray bottles to apply the dyes in a fine mist over the folded or flat cloth.  In the second technique, dye colors are applied to your fabric and then removed to form new colors and designs.  In the third, you spread potato dextrin onto your material to create a resist of crackling lines.  Dye is then applied over the resist, resulting in a design of fine lines of color on a light colored fabric.  These techniques are great fun and add fabulous fabrics to your stash!  For best results, a minimal room temperature of 65 º F throughout the dyeing process is recommended.  Four Lessons.  This class is only offered once a year.  Level: Intermediate. Prerequisite:  You must have taken one of Marjie's conventional chemical dyeing classes.  No exceptions.  See Supply List.
$36         Class starts May 31.

Lesson One opens on May 31; Lesson Two, June 7; Lesson Three, June 14; and Lesson Four, June 21.  Once a lesson opens, it remains available until this classroom closes on July 12.

Gutta Resist On Silk   You may be saying, "Just what is gutta?  I've never heard of it and can't even pronounce it!"  Gutta is pronounced, "GOO-tah"; emphasize the "goo", literally and figuratively.  Originally gutta was a thick, slimy substance that came from latex in Indonesian rubber trees.  When drawn or painted onto silk, gutta will dry and become a barrier or wall that holds back the liquid dyes we apply.  Designs and patterns are the result, with a lovely white line left where the resist was originally laid down.  A simple washing out in the kitchen sink, and there you have it!  You have become a fabric designer!  Gutta resist is quite similar to the batik process, but easier, less dangerous, and faster.  It used to be a fairly complicated process involving dry cleaning, but you are going to learn some shortcuts in this class, taught by fabric designer and artist, Marjie McWilliams.  For best results, a minimal room temperature of 65º F throughout the dyeing process is recommended.   Four Lessons.  All levels.  This class is offered once a year.  See Supply List.
$36         Class starts June 14.

Lesson One opens on June 14; Lesson Two, June 21; Lesson Three, June 28; and Lesson Four, July 5.  Once a lesson opens, it remains available until this classroom closes on July 26.
