Patchwork & Piecing

Bargello Twist is a new and exciting way to create Bargello.  With a few easy changes, your design will break away from the regular Bargello rules.  The quilt  will no longer stretch out horizontally, like traditional bargello, but will reflect and rotate.  Use irregular strip widths and move away from the predictability of a  colour run.  Ruth Blanchet will guide you through each step of the process, helping you choose from multiple options in design, fabrics, colour and quilting ideas.  Level: This is an advanced Bargello class.  You need to have taken Bargello Seasons before taking this class.  Four Lessons.  See Supply List.
$36        Class starts May 31.

Lesson One opens on May 31; Lesson Two, June 7; Lesson Three, June 14; and Lesson Four on June 21. Once a lesson opens, it remains available until your classroom closes on July 12.

Buttons and Bows   Do you buy fabrics in collections?  Was that bundle of fat quarters at the quilt shop just too gorgeous to pass by?  Whether you have a stack of bright neon prints, a bundle of Civil War reproductions or a pack of purples, Buttons & Bows is the perfect showcase for your beautiful fabrics!  The main block is 11" but with its large octagon center, it provides ample room to show off your favorites. Patti Anderson will show you how to accurately rotary cut and machine piece this odd-sized block that was previously pieced with templates only.  Then you will learn how to stitch it into a setting with little 9-Patches that make the blocks appear to float on the surface of the quilt.  The finished quilt measures 72.5" x 72.5".  Special note: This is a fat quarter friendly quilt!  Three Lessons.  Level: Intermediate and above.  See Supply List for details and a different quilt.
$27         Class starts May 31.

Lesson One opens on May 31; Lesson Two, June 7; and Lesson Three, June 14.  Once a lesson opens, it remains available until this classroom closes on July 5.

Jane Was Nuts   In 1863, an amazing woman named Jane Stickle made a fabulous quilt with 225 blocks.  Several years ago, Brenda Papadakis turned that quilt into the book Dear Jane and thousands of quilters fell in love.  Carol Miller was one of the people who was captivated by the size and variety of tiny blocks.  When she realized that all of Jane's blocks finish to 4 1/2", she was horrified.  That number does not divide evenly by anything!  Not to be deterred, Carol designed Jane Was Nuts, over 124 blocks that finish to 4", a wonderfully even number.  Join her for the endlessly creative process of using up your smallest pieces and turning them into gem-like blocks.  Make anything you want with the results.  There will be lots of options as we play with the design possibilities.  Basic rotary cutting skills required.  All levels.  Three Lessons. See Supply List for more pictures.  The quilt above is only 20" wide.
$27         Class starts May 31.

Lesson One opens on May 31; Lesson Two, June 7; and Lesson Three, June 14.  Once a lesson opens, it remains available until this classroom closes on July 5.

Starting From Scratch   Have you wanted to learn to quilt but were daunted by long supply lists?  Are you lost when the instructions tell you  to buy 2 lights, 2 mediums and 2 darks?  This class is for you!  It is a soup-to-nuts approach to quilting for the absolute beginner.  Carol Miller will teach you how to buy your tools, how to select your fabric, which patterns to use and how to size them.  The class is geared toward making your quilt top with a rotary cutter and a sewing machine, but some hand piecing instruction is included and much of the information is the same for either method.  The quilting at the end of class will be by hand.  You will learn the basic square, half square, flying geese, and quick-pieced 4-patch units.  Students will then make a medium square or a lap quilt, using the two basic blocks learned in class.  Variations will be included.  Instructions will take you through the batting, hand quilting and binding.  You CAN learn to quilt!  Six Lessons.  There will be an extra week between Lessons Four and Five, so you will have plenty of time to complete your blocks.  See Supply List for more details.
$55         Class starts June 14.

Lesson One opens on June 14; Lesson Two, June 21; Lesson Three, June 28; Lesson Four, July 5; Lesson Five, July 19; and Lesson Six, July 26.  Once a lesson opens, it remains available until this classroom closes on August 16.

Quilt the Zodiac   What's your sign?  Whether we believe or not, we all know our astrological signs.  Ruth Blanchet has turned the 12 signs into elegant appliqué, along with stars and the character ring.  You can use one sign to make a pillow or tote, a pair or more for a banner or small wall hanging or complete the entire zodiac.  Your appliqué will go together quickly with machine sewing and fusible webbing.  These stylish motifs could decorate scrapbooks, sweatshirts or be mixed with traditional pieced blocks.  The sky is the limit!  Level: Advanced beginners and up.  Four Lessons.  See Supply List for more photos.
$36      [credit card only]   Class starts May 17.

Lesson One opens on May 17; Lesson Two, May 24; Lesson Three, May 31; and Lesson Four, June 7.  Once a lesson opens, it remains available until this classroom closes on June 28.

Stress-free Celtic Tablerunner  Celtic knotwork designs are captivating because of their intricacy and symmetry.  Do not let that frighten you away.  Now you can learn Nancy Chong's stress-free methods and discover how easy it is to make this tablerunner.  You will learn about marking fabrics (whether light or dark); learn a new, easier and quicker way to make bias tape; learn a wonderfully easy method to hand appliqué the Celtic bias strips in place; and explore options for inserting fabric, stained-glass-style, to create your own unique tablerunner.  Master the technique in this small project and you will be able to use it in other quilting projects. This class is suitable for beginners, but experienced appliquérs will learn new skills too.  Three Lessons.  See Supply List for more pictures and outline.  There will be an extra week between Lessons Two and Three to complete the appliqué portion of the project.
$28         Class starts May 24.

Lesson One opens on May 24; Lesson Two, May 31; and Lesson Three, June 14.   Once a lesson opens, it remains available until this classroom closes on July 5.

Drunkard's Flowers   Have you ever wanted to do a pattern that used Drunkard's Path pieces?  Were you afraid of the curved piecing?  At last, there is a method for this lovely pattern without cutting and stitching all those curves!  In this class, Joan Waldman will teach you  to machine stitch the curves using a freezer paper/glue stick method, then arrange them with plain blocks and add appliqué to create a wonderful  quilt.  You will choose from five appliqué techniques to finish the quilt top.  An extra week is added to the schedule between Lessons Two and Three to allow time for sewing.  Four Lessons.  Students should be comfortable with their sewing machines.  See Supply List.  This class is offered once a year.
$37         Class starts June 7.

Lesson One opens on June 7; Lesson Two, June 14; Lesson Three, June 28; and Lesson Four, July 5.  Once a lesson opens, it remains available until this classroom closes on July 26.

Garments & Accessories

InVestigations   A vest can completely change the look of any outfit.  In Lesson One, you will learn to adjust a commercial pattern for a perfect fit and will then make the simple pieced vest shown here.  Then the fun begins as you create scrunched fabric, sew tucks and pleats and add couched threads and yarns.  In Lesson Four, Carol Miller will show you how to design your own vest.  Level: Intermediate.  You should be comfortable with your sewing machine.  Four Lessons.  See Supply List for more photos.

$36         Class starts May 24.

Lesson One opens on May 24; Lesson Two, May 31; Lesson Three, June 7; and Lesson Four, June 14.  Once a lesson opens, it remains available until this classroom closes on July 5.

Fingers of Fire Tree Skirt   In this class Nyla Morrison will help you make two 50" tree skirts using the 9° OR the 10° circle wedge ruler.  The tree skirts will be the reverse of each other and you make them at the same time.  With no seams to match, this is a very easy and  forgiving project.  A working sewing machine and a basic knowledge of rotary cutting should get you through this class.  If you don’t think you need two tree skirts, you can make one into a table topper.  They also make great gifts or donations to a Christmas bazaar.  Remember you are not limited to just Christmas fabrics in tree skirts.  Once you learn the process, there are a number of variations, including a chevron design and a real scrappy tree skirt using all those leftover strips of fabric from other projects.  All skill levels.  Three Lessons. See Supply List.
$27         Class starts June 7.

Lesson One opens on June 7; Lesson Two, June 14; and Lesson Three, June 21.  Once a lesson opens, it remains available until this classroom closes on July 12.

Embroidery Modules

Digitized Quilting   Did you ever think that you would be able to sit at a home embroidery sewing machine and quilt?  With photos and step by step instructions, Joanne Winn will show you how to use your embroidery module to quilt.  Students will construct a 30" x 30" simple one block quilt with wide borders to accommodate the feather border quilting designs.  This method is especially nice for hands that no longer enjoy moving the quilt under the machine manually.  Embroidery designs included with this class are: a large triangle, small double triangle, center design and multihooped feather corner border design.  These designs were digitized using software that automatically sequences the designs so there are no jump stitches.  Skill level: Intermediate to Advanced. You must know how to use your embroidery module. Students should also have experience with rotary cutting and piecing a simple quilt.  This is NOT A BEGINNER CLASS.  Three Lessons.  See Supply List.
$27   Registration closed   Class starts May 24.

Lesson One opens on May 24; Lesson Two, May 31; and Lesson Three, June 7.  Once a lesson opens, it remains available until this classroom closes on June 28.

Digitized Quilting will be offered again on July 19.
