Patchwork & Piecing

Crazy Quilt Piecing   Crazy quilting is not just slapping together whatever scraps you have laying around and hoping for the best. There are different methods of constructing the blocks depending on the look you want to achieve and the kind of scraps you are working with.  You will make two classic blocks as well as two blocks using innovative methods.  Cindy Thury Smith will provide a brief overview of historical crazy quilting styles and share the pros and cons of each method.  You will learn how to avoid some common crazy piecing problems and practice some embellishment options.  References for further study will also be provided.  You will be able to print out a foundation pattern.  If you want to try this Victorian specialty, this is the perfect opportunity!  Three Lessons.  Supply List.  All levels.  Be inspired by student work in the Gallery.
$30      Classes start May 17.

Lesson One opens on May 17; Lesson Two, May 24; and Lesson Three on, May 31.  Once a lesson opens, it remains available until this classroom closes on June 29.

Hand Piecing   Learn how to make templates, mark fabric, sew straight and curved seams.  Susan Purney-Mark will take you through all the steps in the hand piecing process as you complete three small projects.  Hand piecing gives you the freedom to work on your quilts anywhere, anytime.  All levels.  Three Lessons.  Extra week after Lesson Two.  Supply List.  See examples of student work in the Gallery.

Bargello Twist is a new and exciting way to create Bargello.  With a few easy changes, your design will break away from the regular Bargello rules.  The quilt  will no longer stretch out horizontally, like traditional bargello, but will reflect and rotate.  Use irregular strip widths and move away from the predictability of a  colour run.  Ruth Blanchet will guide you through each step of the process, helping you choose from multiple options in design, fabrics, colour and quilting ideas.  Level: This is an advanced Bargello class.  You need to have taken Bargello Seasons before taking this class.  Four LessonsSupply List.  See student quilts in the Gallery.
$40     Class starts May 31.

Lesson One opens on May 31; Lesson Two, June 7; Lesson Three, June 14; and Lesson Four on June 21. Once a lesson opens, it remains available until your classroom closes on July 20.

Bargello Seasons   Based on the Flame Stitch design in needlepoint, Bargello quilts fascinate us with the complexity and rich interplay of color and value.  In this beginner class, Ruth Blanchet takes you through the four seasons as she shows you four distinctly different bargello techniques: staggered seams, matching seams, adding fractured strips and reversing half the design to create a reflection.  The fourth will be sewn as a quilt-as-you-go project.  You will be able to make four individual small projects or combine them as one large quilt.  Border and quilting options are included.  Level: Anyone confident with rotary cutting and machine sewing.  There will be an extra week between each lesson.  Four LessonsSupply List.  See student quilts in the Gallery
$43     Class starts June 14.

Lesson One opens on June 14; Lesson Two, June 28; Lesson Three, July 12; and Lesson Four, July 26.  Once a lesson opens, it remains available until this classroom closes on August 24.

Sewfasst   When piecing, do you dislike sewing individually cut pieces of fabric together, especially along bias edges?  Barbara Dieges does, so she developed the Sewfasst techniques.  With these quick strip  piecing techniques, you will not waste fabric.  You will save time and end up with Bonus Patches that can be used in the borders or in other projects.  You will learn to make square diamonds, flying geese, quarter square patches, 4-patches and half square triangles.  They are all sewn with squares and rectangles!  We will look at a few of the many blocks that use these units and discuss how to adjust the sizes to fit your needs.  Making the small class project is optional.  Process is emphasized.  Make samples or incorporate the techniques into a project of your choice.  All levels of experience. Three Lessons.  This class will be offered once a year.  Supply List.  See student work in the Gallery.
$30      Class starts June 21.

Lesson One opens on June 21; Lesson Two, June 28; and Lesson Three, July 5.  Once a lesson opens, it remains available until this classroom closes on August 3.

T-Shirt Quilts   Do you have a closet full of t-shirts that you don’t wear anymore but can’t bear to part with for sentimental reasons?  Preserve your special memories by sewing your shirts into a uniquely personal t-shirt quilt.  Fran Gonzalez will recommend the best supplies and techniques for this project as she helps you to prepare, cut, stabilize, square and assemble your designs into the layout of your choice.  Level: You must have basic quilt making skills and rotary cutting equipment for this class.  This is a construction class, NOT an Electric Quilt class!  Three LessonsSupply List.

Appliqué

Give and Take Appliqué   Wouldn't it be nice to finish an appliqué project without having a pile of wasted fabric left over?  Susan Purney-Mark will show how to do just that.  With her method, you will get both the positive and negative image and use every bit of your gorgeous fabric.  There are many variations of the basic concept and you will have a chance to experiment during class.  The appliqué is done using fusible web so there are no turned edges.  The shapes will come out just the way you cut them.  All levels.  Your sewing machine must do a zigzag stitch.  Three Lessons.  See Supply List.

Lesson One opens on June 7; Lesson Two, June 14; and Lesson Three on, June 21.  Once a lesson opens, it remains available until this classroom closes on July 20.

Stress-free Celtic Tablerunner  Celtic knotwork designs are captivating because of their intricacy and symmetry.  Do not let that frighten you away.  Now you can learn Nancy Chong's stress-free methods and discover how easy it is to make this tablerunner.  You will learn about marking fabrics (whether light or dark); learn a new, easier and quicker way to make bias tape; learn a wonderfully easy method to hand appliqué the Celtic bias strips in place; and explore options for inserting fabric, stained-glass-style, to create your own unique tablerunner.  Master the technique in this small project and you will be able to use it in other quilting projects. This class is suitable for beginners, but experienced appliquérs will learn new skills too.  Three LessonsSupply List.  There will be an extra week between Lessons Two and Three to complete the appliqué portion of the project.  See finished student projects in the Gallery.

Too Easy Stained Glass™    Let’s face it.  Quilters love fabric, but some fabrics are hard to use.  Those wonderful landscape fabrics will not be the same if we cut them into tiny pieces.  What to do?  Daphne Greig has the perfect solution.  Framing your quilt with leading lines creates an often surprising new view of your fabrics, drawing the eye in and giving greater attention to your focus fabric.  You will learn a no-bias, no-glue stained glass technique.  As you make a small project, Daphne will show you the Too Easy steps that set this approach apart from other methods.  You will then explore further design options for a variety of fabrics and sizes.  All Levels.  Three LessonsSupply List.
$30      Class starts June 7.

Design

Fractal Fragments   Do you know about fractals?  You might think they are a computer age phenomenon, but they are as old as creation itself, and as ordinary as clouds, a flower or the circulation of your blood.  Fractals are a special kind of pattern and a vast and mostly untouched resource for quilt design.  In this class, Lily Kerns will give you an overview of typical fractal elements and then show you how to apply them to familiar quilting techniques.  Working with just a fragment of the fractal is one of the secrets of translating a complex fractal image into fabric.  Skill level: This class is about design and the only skill required is a willingness to experiment.  You can even play with ideas now and worry about learning quilt construction skills later.  Detailed sewing and quilt construction directions are NOT included.  Supply ListFour Lessons.  See student projects in the Gallery.
